Against the unprecedented backdrop of Covid-19, the MidWest Response Pilot provided much needed positivity and support for the region’s hotels at a time that was undeniably the most challenging ever.
Having quickly identified the scale of the temporary job lay offs, the Mid West Response Pilot was founded in collaboration with the hotel and retail community to upskill our teams during the closure period.
This proactive and coordinated response provided much needed focus and support for our hotel colleagues. It also gave our region an edge when it came to reopening. Whilst offering a wide range of education opportunities, in particular, the level 5 Infection, Prevention & Control programme allowed hotels and their teams to reopen with confidence. It also was an enabler for achieving the Fáilte Ireland Covid-19 Safety Charter so it was a win win.
The quick mobilisation, commitment and action of the Mid West Response Pilot had a huge impact in building the skills base of our much loved teams and region to facilitate a better recovery.

“As a retailer based in Tipperary, I was delighted to support the MidWest Response Pilot by encouraging both my employees and fellow retailers in Tipperary to participate in this great initiative.
Courses relevant to Retail were quickly identified, such as Infection, Prevention & Control training. Post successful training, the receipt of a digital & physical IP&C sticker from the Group to acknowledge successful training was an added bonus for retailers to display on their premises and websites.
The speed of execution and collaboration of all involved in this pilot is to be commended. I look forward to continuing my relationship with MidWest Response”.
Dermot Kelly - Executive General Manager - Great National South Court Hotel
“As Chairperson for the Shannon branch of the Irish Hotel Federation I was delighted to have been involved from the outset in the formation of the Midwest Response Task force, in this we identified the initial training requirements which were required for our sector in order to assist us with preparing for the re-opening of the hospitality industry, we were afforded the opportunity to upskill many of our hospitality teams with relevant courses that can be applied across various industries as we embrace the new post Covid world. I would highly recommend the online training platforms and the supports that were put in place to assist our employees adapt to the new way of learning”.
Michael Buckley - Debenhams
“Having recently completed the Infection, Prevention & Control course with Midwest Response Group I am looking forward to applying my new knowledge and skills to help protect myself, my colleagues and our customers within the workplace. Additionally, the skills and knowledge I have learned are very much transferable to other industries. The digital course was very straightforward to understand and the benefits of taking part become even more obvious as you progress the course. I would encourage anyone working within the retail, hospitality or an customer service environment to take part on this course – or one of a number provided through Midwest Response."

"Having recently completed the Limerick Clare Education & Training Board’s QQI Level 5 On Line Training in Infection Prevention & Control, I wish to take this opportunity to recommend the programme. Personally, it was a first for me in terms of completing a tutor led online programme. The fact that we had over 25 persons on our course provided the critical group learning environment whilst the subject matter was very relevant to the challenge now faced by our industry. I am confident that our team are considerably better prepared to face that challenge.
The requirement to undergo an Examination at the end of the programme (though not always welcome!) does add considerable credibility to the training.
Based on this experience, I feel confident in promoting this method of training to our team members and I hope to undertake further on line courses in the coming months."
Claire Kennedy - HR Manager - Strand Hotel
“My initial involvement in the mid-west response pilot was to rally the troops by spreading the word about this great initiative and encourage staff members in our hotel and neighbouring hotels to sign up for a great variety of online courses – to retrain, upskill or learn something completely new during this challenging time of Covid-19 business closure.
I took an interest in the Management & Leadership course provided by the University of Limerick – I am now three weeks in and whilst it has been a very different way of learning it has been easy to get the hang of it and I will definitely continue with further online training courses in the future”.
Stephen O'Connor - General Manager - Strand Hotel
“Delighted to have been directly involved in the MidWest Response Pilot, formed quickly in the aftermath of the Covid-19 shutdown and informed by Hotel General & HR Managers, MidWest Response was a ‘One Stop Shop’ mapping the training needs of our staff to available short term courses, such as Infection, Prevention & Control. I was impressed with the large selection of course available online and reassured that the courses offered all had transferable skills”.
Karen Glynn - HR Manager - Woodlands House Hotel
“I was very happy to participate in the MidWest Response pilot, I and a number of my colleagues completed the Infection, Prevention & Control course and found it informative and very helpful when we were preparing to reopen. I’m currently attending a Conflict Management course, I’m really enjoying it and love that it’s online so study can be accommodated around my work/life balance.
Thanks, MidWest Response for your support to make this happen, I really enjoyed the experience and hope to continue attending more courses in the future”.
